Finding A Breeder

Please, don't buy Mudi puppies from internet
puppy brokers, traders or pet stores!

Instead please contact the AMA or an AMA breeder listed in the Breeder Directory for assistance in locating a Mudi puppy. The lowest price, best health and highest quality of your next companion can only be provided by a dedicated, responsible Mudi breeder. Puppy buyers set the minimum level of acceptable breeding quality everytime they purchase a puppy, please buy your Mudi puppy with this in mind.

ATTENTION:  Please be aware of current and changing US state laws and international laws that may differ from state to state and country to country, that concern the selling and purchasing of puppies BEFORE selling or bringing home a puppy.  They may also differ from the suggestions we have listed below as well.

What to look for in a Mudi Breeder

To have the best Mudi puppy companion may involve acquiring one from another country at this point in time.  The Mudi is that rare.  The best things in life are not always the easiest to find and you may have to wait for the right breeder to have the right litter for you.  Research is of great importance and does matter most in the areas of breed compatibility with your lifestyle and needs, as well as in the choice of breeder you choose to become involved with. Having good contacts/sources that have good intentions is also important, breeder representatives may not have your best interest in mind.  Be careful who you use as an advisor, all are not equal.

The AMA members and breeders believe that a good Mudi should be able to do what it was intended to do (herd), will be mentally fit to do it (not a nervous wreck or paralyzingly shy), be healthy and able to do these things for a long time, not be inbred or linebred (to keep gene pool diversity), and look beautiful (and like a Mudi) while doing these things.

Mudi breeders should breed with these 5 things in mind to keep the breed stable and able, and preserved for future generations.  The Mudi should be bred with the whole dog in mind, not just the one or two points most often considered.  Titles belong at both ends of the Mudi's name before the dog should be considered for breeding.

You should look for a breeder that does the following with all of the dogs they breed and breed to. The country of origin or where the litter is born is not as important as these 5 points below:

-Health testing (official grading with an approved orthopedic association, not a private vet) of both parents and the proof of passing grades readily available when you request to see the official documents (hips a minimum on both parents; elbows, patella’s and eye tests are also strongly recommended), also knowing the grandparents and siblings health results is highly recommended

- Herding instinct test on both parents, otherwise the breed's function will be lost

- Temperament tests on both parents (with of course a passing score)

- Breeding exams or show results that prove conformation and breed conformity quality of both parents (otherwise you may be breeding with less than good quality dogs)

- The litter has a low COI (Coefficient Of Inbreeding, see the COI article on the AMA Articles page for more information, and see the AMA Services page for information on how to find out the COI of any puppy or dog for free)

These are additional recommendations to look for and verify when choosing a litter and breeder:

- A breeder that whelps and raises the puppies in a clean, safe and relaxed household environment

- A breeder that breeds quality, not quantity litters, from a small amount of owned dogs kept at their home, this shows their concern for the puppies and not money

- Removes rear dewclaws

- Crate trains

- Microchips or tattoo's every puppy born

- Gives pedigrees from an acceptable Kennel Club (yes there are unacceptable ones) to every puppy born

- Gives the appropriate shots, deworming and socialization

- Only breeds the bitches once a year and no earlier than two years of age at the first breeding (females)

- Makes sure the bitch is in the best health with shots up to date before breeding her

- Keeps the puppies till they are at least 7.5 weeks old before placing them in their new homes

- Feeds the dam and the pups high quality food

- Answers all questions asked by the buyer and tells you they will be there for you after you buy the puppy too

- Provides a contract in English

- Will supply references

You can be part of the solution or part of the problem, the choice is yours, please select your puppy wisely, the future of the Mudi breed depends on it.
