Mudi Health and Breed Concerns

-Genetic epilepsy has occurred in the breed, currently there are 18 dogs considered to be epileptic since the 1980's

-Skin problems such as itchy, dry skin and loss of hair in patches, nails breaking, possibly either climate, diet or not enough sunshine related

-Wheat allergy seems to bother some dogs, avoid dog chows that incorporate this into their food, or feed the raw food diet (see Links page for raw feeding links)

-Hip Dysplasia is not common, but is in the breed, be sure to get proof of a passing HD score on both parents of any puppy you plan to purchase from a known Health Registry such as the ones listed below.  If the parent dogs are 2 years of age and have not been checked you should assume that they have either failed or the breeder is not interested in promoting hip health and choose another breeder

-Albinism, both pink and blue eyed versions, extremely rare

-Cataracts and other eye diseases are extremely rare but have occurred

-Some elbow and patella problems have been seen but they are rare

-Non-standard colors born into litters, rare, but does occur

-Temperament issues do occur and are usually due to improper socialization and training, be sure to ask for temperament test scores on your puppies parents and a record of proof

-Incorrect bite (level, over or underbite), wry mouth, missing teeth, extra teeth, fused teeth do occur, however missing teeth, extra teeth and fused teeth are becoming more of a problem, make sure both parents have full and correct dentition

-Missing testicles do occur, but not commonly

-Sometimes, ears will not stand up, tails will not carry over the back, the fur will be short or straight, faces and fronts of legs will have longer hair, the height will go over or under the limits, the eye color or pigment color will be incorrect, but these are not health related
